Take Four or Five

New idea for a four-and-a-half minute meditation: Hit play on “Zata” and watch the SoundCloud sonic bar graph widget turn orange as you listen. Imagine you’re looking at a cityscape across the water, with the reflection underneath, and that the city is absorbing the music, people slowing down, nodding and smiling at each other as they pass. Become one of them, feeling good, having a superfine day.

You can do that with any song, theoretically. But by the end of this mesmerizing tune, Ty Showers will have you in the zone he was in when he came up with it.

It’s a slow, four-beat, four-chord structure, starting with a gentle guitar figure over a shaker and relaxed drums. Echoey strings announce where we’re headed, and then there’s a nod (and smile) at Jean-Luc Ponty with a long melodic synth-violin passage that a piano will later recap. They’ll join forces at the end, taking you back to the head of the tune and leaving you satisfied.

One of the comments on this song from a SoundClouder named Jazzy Lounge Radio is, “This is a hit. I love it!” You’ll love it, too, but “hit” may be too punchy a word for “Zata.” It’s a beaut.
