about

Ty Showers hits the ground running (or drumming) for “Trio (Part 1),” an energetic slice of fusion delight driven by a real-live drummer, hitting nice and heavy. Don’t bother trying to figure out the time signature (it’s nominally in 3/4, believe it or not) or which beat accents are falling on—just sit back and enjoy the big boom.

The song divides neatly. Keys come to the forefront after the first minute-and-a-half dominated by a fluid synth-bass, winding around the driving rhythm like that long AUX cable in your car that always gets caught under the emergency brake or passenger seat, so you have to unwind and untangle it before you can plug your iPod in and hit the road. Yeah, it’s like that, only fun.

The bass goes absolutely nuts a little past the midway point, and you might expect the tune to kick into an even higher gear, but instead, Ty breaks it down with a steady passage of cycling eighth-notes that almost suggests a twelve-tone melodic figure. It’s actually closer to pentatonic, and this artist is no Arnold Shoenberg serialist, but there’s an interesting persistence to the last minute or so, where the skeleton of the tune is laid bare. It reminds me a little of the way John Coltrane used to repeat melodic lines, as if studying them or trying to understand himself better.

At the fade, you may look around for Part 2 of the trio. If you find it, tell me where. This piece is headed somewhere cool, and I’d like to be there when it arrives.
